Chennai: Meena, a child survivor of the catastrophic 2004 tsunami, was married by people’s collector IAS official Dr. J. Radhakrishnan in a touching ceremony in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu.

As the district collector at the time, Radhakrishnan played a crucial role in relief operations following the December 26, 2004, tsunami, which claimed over 6,000 lives.

People’s Collector: A Lifelong Bond Forged in Tragedy

Meena, who was just a baby when the disaster struck, was discovered by Radhakrishnan in Keechankuppam village amidst the rubble. Moved by her plight, he and his wife, Krithika, ensured her education and upbringing at the Annai Sathya Government Children’s Home. Over the years, their bond remained strong, with Radhakrishnan playing a key role in her major life milestones.

A Special Wedding Ceremony

Radhakrishnan traveled to Nagapattinam to officiate Meena’s wedding at Sri Nellukkadai Mariamman Temple. Several tsunami survivors who had grown up with Meena at the children’s home also attended the ceremony, making it a poignant reunion.

Sharing his emotions on Instagram, Radhakrishnan wrote:

“It’s a pleasure to be a part of Meena & Manimaran’s wedding today in Nagapattinam. Meena and Sowmya are brimming with tenacity, and our post-tsunami journey with the Nagai children has always been one of hope. Seeing Sowmya, Subhash, and young Sara celebrate their good friend’s big day was heartwarming. Spending time with Krithika, Arvind, and others from that era brought back so many memories. We couldn’t help but reflect on how quickly time has passed. The absence of the late Suryakala ma’am was deeply felt, but Malarvizhi and Manivannan’s unwavering dedication to the children’s welfare remains inspiring. Watching them grow, graduate, and settle into beautiful lives fills my heart with joy. This is a family that transcends blood ties.”

He also thanked Thiru Venkatesh and Yazhisai Marriage Hall for making the occasion seamless.

Internet Applauds the People’s Collector

Radhakrishnan’s heartfelt post quickly went viral, garnering over 11,000 likes on Instagram. Social media users praised his commitment and compassion.

One user wrote, “Sir, you have set a benchmark as the People’s Collector.”

Another commented, “Very inspiring, sir. There are not enough words to describe the kindness and support you have given these children. I salute you.”

The emotional story of Meena’s wedding serves as a testament to enduring human kindness and the bonds that can emerge from tragedy, inspiring people across the country.
